IAOMT SMART-protocol amalgam removal, done the safe way.

IAOMT SMART-protocol amalgam removal, done the safe way.

Overview

We are certified in the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology’s SMART process (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) — a research-based protocol, ratified by the IAOMT in July 2016, for removing mercury amalgam fillings as safely as possible.

Every SMART removal includes rubber dam isolation with drapes and barriers, a separate oxygen source for you, high-volume suction, a dedicated dental air vacuum, copious water spray to suppress mercury, and proper vapor-protection masks for the doctor and assistant. The amalgam is sectioned in large chunks rather than ground down, and your mouth is thoroughly rinsed afterward. You may also be offered a charcoal or chlorella slurry to rinse and swallow before the procedure for extra protection (unless you decline or it’s not clinically appropriate for you). For more on the protocol, visit iaomt.org.

FAQ

Frequently Ask Questions

Answers to a few common questions about this treatment.

SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique, the IAOMT's research-based standard for removing amalgam fillings with rubber dam isolation, high-volume suction, and independent oxygen — ratified in July 2016.

Coverage varies by plan. As an out-of-network practice, we can file claims on your behalf as a courtesy — ask our team for details specific to your plan.

Composite resin, ceramic, and gold are the main alternatives. Most patients choose composite because its white color matches your natural tooth and the cost is moderate — and a 2016 study found posterior amalgam fillings actually had a higher annual failure rate than composites.

We offer a dental biocompatibility test through Clifford Consulting and Research: a blood sample is evaluated for antibodies to the chemical ingredients used in dental materials, and you're given a clear list of which materials are safe for you and which to avoid.
