Routine Dental Exam

Objective, personalized evaluation for a lifetime of oral health.

Objective, personalized evaluation for a lifetime of oral health.

Overview

Our hygiene department focuses on giving you the tools needed to have a healthy mouth for a lifetime. Dental fitness is an objective evaluation of your current dental health — after assessing your plaque, gums, and bone, you’re placed into a fitness level from 1 (healthy) to 4, with a clear plan to improve and maintain your home care.

We also guide you toward dental products that avoid parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, phthalates, fluoride, and artificial colors — look for these at stores like Harris Teeter, Whole Foods, EarthFare, and Target — and we carry a few brands in-office for your convenience, including:

PurO3’s ozonated oils

and Oral Essentials’ natural oral hygiene line.

We also offer OralDNA® MyPerioPath® testing

— a lab test that identifies harmful bacteria linked to gum disease, tooth loss, bad breath, dental decay, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke (the CDC estimates roughly 47% of American adults have some form of periodontal disease) — so we can catch problems while they’re still easy to treat.

FAQ

Frequently Ask Questions

Answers to a few common questions about this treatment.

Levels run from 1 (healthy) to 4, based on an evaluation of your plaque, gums, and bone. Your level determines the home-care plan we build with you.

It's a lab test that identifies and measures harmful bacteria in your mouth, helping us catch gum disease and related health risks early — the CDC estimates about 47% of American adults have some form of periodontal disease.

Oil pulling is a natural technique for freshening breath and supporting oral health — only if you don't have amalgam fillings. Use 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and slowly push and pull it through your teeth for 7 minutes, then spit it out (not in the sink). You can add a fresh teaspoon and continue for another 7 minutes, or simply continue with the same oil for at least 15 minutes total for the best results — just don't swish vigorously.
